Metal Texture in Product Design — Real Metal or Just Plating?

Deciding how to render metal texture on a product is never just a finish choice — it’s a balancing act between cost, weight, and durability. A product that should feel substantial in the hand but comes out light will lose the user’s trust no matter how good the finish looks, yet plenty of products simply can’t afford real metal.

1. Real Metal vs. Surface Deposition — Which One?

CNC-machining or die-casting aluminum and stainless steel delivers the weight and coolness-to-the-touch that only real metal can give. Vacuum metal deposition (VMD) and electroplating, on the other hand, lay a thin metallic layer over plastic to produce a shine that reads as metal at a glance.

Metal’s status as the benchmark for premium didn’t appear overnight. In watches, cameras, and fine writing instruments, metal has long stood as proof of precision machining and durability, and that association carried straight over into consumer electronics. Consumers now approach a product having already internalized an unspoken equation: cold and heavy means well made.

Real Metal Machining

CNC or die-casting. The weight and coolness are genuine, and anodized color holds up better than paint over time. The tradeoff is higher unit cost, and complex geometries get difficult fast.

Surface Deposition & Plating

VMD or electroplating. Lighter in the hand, but reflectivity and color come close to real metal. The deposited layer is thin and scratches easily — damage it and the plastic underneath shows through immediately.

2. Don’t Forget the Weight Variable

The most overlooked factor in rendering metal texture is weight. A surface can look flawlessly metallic, but if it feels light in the hand, users register it as fake almost instantly. Some products even add an internal counterweight purely to correct this perception.

That said, “heavier always feels more premium” is only half true. What actually drives perception more than raw weight is how that weight is distributed — where the center of gravity sits once the product is in hand. The same weight feels far more stable when its center of mass sits close to the grip, and noticeably cheaper when it’s off-balance.

Have you separated deposition/plating from real metal based on how often that surface is touched?

If the deposited layer wears through, does the substrate color match the metal tone convincingly?

For anodized parts, have you defined an acceptable color-variation range across production lots?

3. When Texture Becomes Brand Narrative

It’s an approach that lets the evidence of use speak honestly instead of hiding it. What makes this work in the first place is that real metal sits underneath the plating — if a deposited coating wears through, the plastic underneath just looks cheap, but if another metal is waiting underneath the plating, the wear itself becomes a story.

If you’re applying this to a live project, define the answer to one question before you lock the finish: what story should this product tell once it’s scratched? For a disposable or low-cost item where you want scratches fully hidden, a matte substrate under a thick paint layer is the safer choice. For a product meant to build attachment over years of use, a material pairing that lets wear show naturally works better. Neither is objectively correct — the right call depends on how long the product is meant to last and what relationship it’s meant to build with the person using it.
